Whilst sailing at the sea area of Strofades Islets the F/B “MILLENIUM EXPRESS II” caught fire in her engine room. POSEIDON in association with KARAPIPERIS TUGS were contracted by her owners under LOF terms for her salvage. Extensive fire extinguishing efforts and water tightening works for stopping the influx of seawater from the openings caused by the fire, took place in open sea. Despite the imminent danger of pollution we were repeatedly denied a port of refuge – for controllable beaching – by local port Authorities as the sensitive ecosystem of the sea area was protected. She was finally towed to Elefsis for the de-oiling and pumping works. The entire operation at Elefsis was closely supervised by SCR appointed by the P&I Club. Services approximately 24 days.
