The 95,000DWT TANKER “ELLI” ran aground close to the headland of Ras Qa ’wah during an emergency aboard on 26 May 2009 in lightship ballast condition. LOF was signed shortly thereafter with POSEIDON, which dispatched her fully manned and equipped fleet to the stranding site, arriving same day. With the unremitting efforts of the SALVAGE MASTER MR. VERGOS, who worked 16 to 20 hours each day and his local crew, a salvage plan was formulated for refloating and intensive preparations put in hand. Divers working around the clock POSEIDON swiftly arranged antipollution booms around the vessel and conducted diving surveys to ensure tanker vessel “ELLI” would not sustain bottom, rudder or propeller damage while being refloated. The PS anchor of “ELLI” was ranged out to deeper water while the tug “VOUKEFALAS” and the 200tons pull winch of the “VERGINA I” hauled the bow away from the beach starting late on June 2^nd. A 3200BHP TUG from Aden Authorities was also released to assist in the refloating efforts. On June 3rd, the skillful rearrangement of the “VERGINA I” to the stern of “ELLI” and relaying of her anchor, and gravitating of ballast water on the stranded vessel was rewarded with success when at 18:45hrs she came smoothly afloat. She was then towed 3.5 n.miles offshore to anchor in 30m sea depth. Several diving inspections showed no underwater damage. No oil pollution was created during the stranding and refloating.
