GIZAN (off Saudi Arabia Red Sea)

Casualty

:

Grounding – Refloating Operation under LOF dd 01/09/09

The 28,610DWT M/T “VALERI” laden with some 27,941.68mt of heavy fuel oil, loaded in Yebo in Saudi Arabia, ran aground on August 30th, approx. 60 miles off Jizan (Red Sea), the latter being the discharging port/destination. POSEIDON was hired shortly after her grounding to refloat her under LOF terms. Dive inspection revealed that she had been hard aground on rocks, with her fore part from amidships area forwards, held in way of cargo tanks No 1, 2, 3 and part of 4. Preventive antipollution measures and lightering part of her cargo took place, to be finally refloated on September 11th, first morning hours. As the grounding location deemed to be inside the Saudi territorial waters, the Authorities requested a diving inspection of the surrounding seabed showing no coral damage caused by the casualty, before allowing the M/T “VALERI” to sail. Vessel was safely redelivered (together with all other salved property thereon) back to her owners on September 12th.
