As a result of grounding and subsequent fire explosion in her No.1, 2 & 3 cargo tanks, the M/T “GUNVOR MAERSK” sank in Amazon River (affluent Rio Negro). The difficulties were such that the comments attracted by world major salvors were to the effect that the refloating of the vessel was uncertain. Despite the above, the vessel was successfully refloated by Mr. VASSILIOS VERGOS, the founder of the later established POSEIDON.
